What Is Imago Relationship Therapy & How Can It Strengthen Relationships?
Understanding Imago Relationship TherapyÂ
Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT) is a specialised form of relationship therapy designed to help romantic couples and other duos strengthen their connection, improve communication and navigate conflict in a way that promotes healing and growth. It was developed in 1980's by relationship experts (and married couple!) Dr Harville Hendrix and Dr Helen LaKelly Hunt. The word imago is Latin for image and refers to the unconscious image of familiar love that we develop through our early relationships and carry into adulthood.

Imago is based on the understanding that relationships have the potential to be powerful spaces for growth, healing and connection. Rather than viewing conflict as a sign that something is wrong, Imago sees conflict as an opportunity to better understand ourselves, our partner and the unmet needs that may be present within the relationship.
Why Do We Choose the Partners We Do?
According to Imago theory, we are often drawn to people who reflect familiar qualities from our earliest caregiving relationships. While these qualities may initially feel attractive, they can later become the source of tension, frustration and conflict.Â
Â
Imago suggests that many relationship struggles are rooted not only in what is happening in the present, but also in the ways our past experiences continue to influence our expectations, reactions and patterns of relating.
By bringing awareness to these patterns, couples can begin to move away from blame and towards understanding, empathy and connection.
The Imago Dialogue
One of the central tools of IRT is the Imago Dialogue - a structured approach to communication that helps partners feel heard, understood and valued. The Imago Dialogue encourages partners to-
Â
-Listen without interruption
-Reflect back what they have heard
-Develop empathy for one another's experiences
-Reduce defensiveness and reactivity
-Create a greater sense of emotional safety

Many couples find that learning this structured way of communicating helps them have conversations that previously felt difficult, impossible or highly charged.

How IRT Can Help
IRT may help couples and other relationship pairs who are experiencing-
Â
-Ongoing conflict and arguments
-Difficulties with communication
-Emotional disconnection
-Trust issues
-Life transitions and change
-Parenting challenges
-Intimacy concerns
-Repeated relationship patterns
-A desire to deepen connection and understanding

Imago is not only for relationships in distress. Many couples seek Imago therapy because they wish to strengthen an already healthy relationship and develop a deeper, more conscious connection.

IRT for Couples & Other Duos
While Imago is best known for its work with romantic couples, its principles can also be applied to other important relationships. Family members, friends, adult siblings, business partners and other significant relationship pairs may also benefit from learning the communication and relational skills offered through an Imago approach.

Imago offers practical tools alongside deeper relational understanding, helping people move beyond cycles of blame, criticism and defensiveness towards greater empathy, connection and growth.Â
